What's In Your Cup?

Facts You Should Know:

-20 million pounds of coffee per year is sold labelled as "Kona" coffee.

-Only 2 million pounds of coffee per year are grown in the Kona District. Where
does the other coffee come from? Good Question!

-A "Kona Blend" means that as little as 10% of the coffee is from Kona. It could
also mean that your coffee is only graded as "prime!"

-Pure 100% Kona Coffee could be mixed with other farms under different growing
conditions. Elevation, rainfall, grown under mac nut or Ohia trees plays a BIG
part in your coffee's taste!

-To label as "Estate Grown 100% Kona" means the coffee beans are graded as;
Extra Fancy, Fancy, #1 and Peaberry from the same farm on which it's grown.

-Coffee has 800 distinct varieties of tastes for YOUR senses. Wine has only 400!

This is why our family strives to educate our customers and why we have 4 different labels. Each farm is grown under different growing conditions which gives each one it's own unique taste!

Prestigious Gevalia Cupping Contest Judge John King:

"We were in 100 percent agreement that Buddha's Cup should be the winner. There's just a different taste. The trick is keeping the classic Kona mellow, sweet profile," he said. "Clearly, Buddha's Cup was the truest to that old style, old school Kona profile. The quintessential Kona coffee."

Customer Feedback:

Just wanted to let you know that we are in Montana drinking our natural dry cherry roast. It is the best coffee I have ever had!!

We love Buddha's Cup and come to the farm every time we visit Hawaii. We will be there in November for our wedding and plan to bring our guests on a farm tour. I also want to stock up on Buddha's beans and coffee for their welcome bags. See you in early November and thanks again for roasting the best coffee there is!!!!

Sincerely,

Aloha Chris from Debbie and Leo in Austin TX

Our coffee arrived safely yesterday (we got home the night before) so all perfect! Our time with you - your patience in teaching us- was one of the highlights of our 27 night odyssey Hawaiian trip. Thank you so much for everything!

We will be back in touch when we need more. Your coffee - your attitude - your setting - was all our favoriteJ

The best to you and yours!

Christine and Manny,

Thank you ever so much for the wonderful tasting experience at Buddha's Cup. Your explanation about the importance of a healthily bio-diverse Eco system was a real eye opener. In retrospect I can correlate the mono-culture plantations I've visited with simple tasting coffee. Continuing in retrospect, I realize all the coffees I like have come from bio-diverse growers at high elevations. It seems so obvious now that you point it out.

The care you take in the field is quite obvious in the cup. We didn't discuss roasting, yet it is clear that you take great care to create the final product. Each tasting sample gave full expression to the unique character of the micro eco-system the bean came from. Kudos to the roasting team for a job well done.

I have searched through numerous plantations and tasting rooms for the rich and mellow Kona flavor. My quest is over. I found the BEST Kona coffee at Buddha's Cup.

It was a great pleasure to get to know you and Manny, and the passion you have for great coffee.

Mahalo, Carl

"Did my homage to the coffee belt. Tried many many cups of coffee. Your estate coffee was truly the best cup of coffee I ever tried."

Hi Jennifer,

Last year I was blessed with the opportunity to visit the Big Island for the first time, I had the most memorable and wonderful vacation I could ever wish for. Visiting Buddha’s Cup coffee farm was on the top of the list since your coffee is what I drink every morning to start my day.

Not too long ago I decided to start my own blog and share with friends and family, and anyone who would like to read the stories about my travel and adventures. My first blog was about my love for coffee and the visit to Buddha’s Cup coffee farm; the response has been incredible. The most comments are about this article and I am sure the most visitors as well.

I am a coffee lover and enjoy yours greatly; for sure I will continue to write about coffee in my blog.

Here is the text from her blog:

A few years ago I was introduced to the best coffee I ever had, being born and raise in the Dominican Republic where drinking coffee is the way everyone starts their day, even children, and where the whole country is full of pride of that “cafesito”, is very hard to top that. I don’t remember when my relationship with coffee started, but let’s say this, I do not have memories of me not drinking coffee. Serve in small “tacita” along a piece of bread or some crackers, which is dunk in the hot, strong espresso… so good!

I found the taste of Kona coffee to be so comforting, perfectly roasted with a little taste of cherry and chocolate, fresh and fruity, just right. It was love at the first sip, Buddha’s coffee, 100% Kona. I still love to have my dominicancoffee, however my first daily choice is Kona, shipped direct from Hawaii in its raw form, then using a home roaster in a just 23 minutes, filling the house with the most wonderful aroma, and then grinding the freshly roasted beans right before brewing.

There are more than 600 independent coffee farms in a 22 miles long by 2 miles wide in a small area. Over 100 of these farms have their own label. The coffee plant was introduced to the Kona district in 1828, only the coffee from the Kona Districts can be described as “Kona”. The volcanic soil, cool nights, sunny mornings and a little rain in the afternoon are contributors of this perfect seed and therefore one of the most expensive coffees in the world.

Last Summer I had the opportunity to vacation in the Big Island, going to visit the coffee farm was on the top of the list. The road was narrow, twisted and elevated, a bit fuggy and cool, kind of mysterious. I was greeted by 4 dogs at the entrance, friendly and adorable. The host was very nice and brewed their award winning coffee from the Gevalia Cupping contest. I also tried their Peaberry coffee which is type II beans and consist of one round bean per cherry.

It was a wonderful experience to see the coffee plants under the rain, to enjoy a cup of coffee in the farm where is grown, and to met the wonderful people that makes drinking Kona a great way to start my day.

Mahalo to everyone in the farm.

Best Regards,

Maureen Simolaris

Dear Manny Ochoa,

Thank you (for) a very excellent souvenir. I went back to Japan on September 27. After return home, I had coffee of buddaha's cup at once. (It has a) very clean and fruity sweetness. (It) opens in a mouth well even if I drink in Japan and (It is) delicious. I regret that (I) should have purchased a little more. Because I think that I cannot go to Hawaii Island immediately, I want to purchase it on the Internet this time. I want to come by all means again when I visit to Hawaii Island.

Thank you.
Yours sincerely,

Takuya Yonezawa

Hello Kona Growers!

I have received my order and all I can say is WOW! Your Kona coffee is superb and I enjoyed every cup! I ground it fresh from the beans and from the wonderful aroma when I opened the pouch to the first sip the experience was sublime. I will be reordering soon.

Thank you.

After two and a half years of not coming to Hawaii, we returned for a week in April. The first day, we went up to the farm to get some coffee and met Manny on the road. It was immediately like old home week. We went on up to the house and couldn't believe the growth of everything since the last time we were there. Not only the coffee but the landscape. We just learned Buddha's Cup won first place in the Gevalia cupping contest. We had a great visit and came away with the best of Buddha's Cup - private reserve, peaberry and a bag from the farm down the hill, Kona Kulana that won runner up. The real surprise was Manny's Brew. It won first place on the Hilo side. It is totally different in a very good way. The roast is light and the bean is noticeably harder if you use a hand grinder but it has all the caffine. Not much is roasted away and the flavor is rich and it works.

I'm glad we got the Kona Kulana as it is definitely its own flavor. There is chocolate in there somewhere if only a hint. It is nice to have a variety of the best coffee in the world.

Thank you all at Buddha's cup for keeping your standards high. It shows in the quality coffees you produce.

Does this coffee even need a competition to say it's the best? I think not.

My wife loves your coffee. Of all the kona coffees she has tasted yours is by far her favorite.

I am really impressed by the quantity of the peaberrys. It seems its exactly what I was looking for. I roasted them yesterday and we'll be cupping it on today. I really like to drink it in the morning before work, taking me on a trip to your Farm mentally ;-). Big thanks for the fast delivery.

Greetings from Hamburg,

I just percolated a cup of the coffee and it is FABULOUS! Congratulations on this amazing bean and the win this year!

Thanks very much for all you've done - I will definitely return as a customer!!

I share (your coffee) with my sisters ;o) . They absolutely love the coffee you sent us, it's excellent. Your Kona Beans produce some of the very best coffee I've ever had. My dad was the taster at Nestle', he decided which blend of beans were used to make their coffee. He said your coffee is excellent. It's all they drink now :o) .

We love your coffee. It's the best we've ever had.

Buddha's Cup Coffee - 100% backed by j.a.c.k.

I have had the good fortune of developing over a course of a few years a relationship with a woman who I originally discovered at random on myspace. She and her family own and operate Buddha'sCup 100% Kona coffee on the big Island. Now and again I receive a care package containing a variety of Buddha's Cup products. But fact and foremost, I am a die hard coffee drinker. I know that no other coffee compares to this in taste and sensation.

Many coffee labels that advertise as Kona coffee simply use a blend of beans with as little as 5-10% being Kona and the rest can be a much cheaper filler bean. As consumers be aware that 100% Kona coffee grown to its finest standards is rich in character and will cost more money. You deserve to spend it on yourself and the farmers deserve to be rewarded and compensated for the craft and integrity for producing a superior product. As well, you as a consumer will live a healthier and more productive life when you make informed and educated purchasing choices. Learn where your goods come from. When possible support local agriculture and sustainable practices. We are all stewards, and in caring for the well being of others you are directly effecting your own cause and development. Share the wealth and knowledge, spread the love and compassion. Think. Talk. Act.

Chris and Manny and all the crew there should know that you have the best coffee in the world. I had been out for about a month and have gotten Jamaica Blue Mountain. Just the other day, I bought a bag of Pure Kona ... I don't know which company they buy from. But it was not as good as yours. It is good. But, if you know about Buddha's Cup, there is a noticeable difference. It must be the altitude and/or the attitude. We would like to get 8 pounds of the medium dark Buddha's Cup. I have a few folks that I would like to give a gift of this kind of coffee. We hope to see you in '09.

Jerry & Sally King

If you love coffee, then you NEED to try Buddha's!! The flavor, the body, the aroma, all truly an experience by themselves.....but blended together in a nice cup of coffee is priceless! I had no idea I hadn't tried REAL HONEST BAD ASS COFFEE until I tried Buddha's Cup....as a matter of fact I am drinking some right now! Always something to look forward to in the morning....thanks Jen!
(I have to work on my decorative cream heart though)

Just wanted to thank you so much for the Estate Blend Coffee I received with my order. The one lb packages replaced for the 5 lb were fine. It was all for my husband from his children and myself. It was the only thing he had asked for, for Father's Day. He really loves Budda's Cup, and had run out about 4 months ago. Friends had bought him back a bag when they visited Hawaii and got him hooked. Again thank you for the gift, he has enjoyed it for the last 3 mornings.

Hawaii is our favorite family vacation - we've visited 13+ times and can hardly wait to go back! I had tried many Kona coffees, but couldn't figure out the "big deal." Until we drove up to Holualoa this past March and bought a little 2 oz. size to try. It was a WONDERFUL treat!

I've purchased a pound for myself and my mother-in-law for Mother's Day. I'm looking forward to its arrival. It will be like a taste of the island!

Aloha,

I think I did a dance when my parents gave me the Buddha's Cup coffee, which is guarded like a treasure in my house because if not, it would be gone tomorrow! I look forward to visiting the Big Island next year and I hope I get to meet you. Thank you for the kindness and generosity you showed my family!!!

Nicole
ps. I'm drinking your coffee out of my favorite Buddha cup right now.

I'm far from a full connoisseur of coffee, but your coffee is by far the best I've ever tasted. I will continue to support your business, as a fellow small business owner; it gives me satisfaction supporting your farm.

Best wishes to you, and thanks for your kindness and honesty. It will be rewarded with my continued business; I've just ordered three more pounds.

Brian

My girlfriend brought your coffee back to me as a gift and I am hooked! She wants to know if she can get a referral fee (Ha!).

I don't ever order anything over the Internet, but your coffee is the exception. Thank you again.
